Bus Stop Safety: The Ten-Foot Rule
Most school bus injuries happen outside the bus. A few habits at the stop make a big difference.
Students should arrive a few minutes early and wait at least ten feet back from the curb. That keeps them out of the driver's blind spots.
Crossing in front of the bus
Walk ten feet ahead of the bus, make eye contact with the driver, and wait for the signal before crossing. Never go back for a dropped item without telling the driver first.
For driversEvery U.S. state requires you to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing and its stop arm out. Rules for divided highways vary, so check your state's driver handbook.
